Minimum Distortion Point Tracking

We proposed the concept of controlling individual power converters such that their harmonics destructively cancel with the harmonics of other power converters on the same network. We show that this strategy can reduce aggregate distortion by one to two orders of magnitude and can significantly improve the stability and performance of large-scale power conversion networks.

Decentralized interleaving of parallel-connected buck converters

We demonstrated the first control strategy for multiphase interleaving that is completely decentralized—requiring only local controllers and local measurements to robustly obtain symmetric phase spacing across arbitrary numbers of parallel-connected dc-dc converters. The strategy can improve the modularity, scalability, and reliability of multiphase dc-dc converters for a variety of applications.

Model-based fault detection and identification for switching power converters

We pioneered a new approach of model-based fault detection and identification for switching power converters. We developed a class of generalized estimators, observers, and identifiers that can precisely diagnosis faults in converters with the ultimate aim of improving the reliability and resilience of microgrid applications. Ongoing efforts are towards extending these techniques to new application areas, including electric vehicle charging and battery management.

Hardware-in-the-loop testing for electric vehicle drive applications

We developed the first hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform dedicated for power electronics circuits, powered by a real-time, one microsecond-time step switched linear simulator. The application demonstration in this work validated the utility of HIL for power electronics, and, in some ways, laid the premise for the power electronics HIL market that exists today. This work was spun-off into the Typhoon HIL company.
